In the June issue of the Bulletin <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6=
/en> , Mohga Kamal Smith & Nina Henderson-Andrade <http://www.who.int/bulle=
tin/volumes/84/6/426.pdf> warn governments that unless they make a strong =
political and financial commitment to addressing health worker shortages in=
developing countries, the crisis will get worse. Phyllida Travis & Andrew =
Cassels <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/427.pdf> ask in another =
editorial whether private health care providers in developing countries can=
expand access to care for groups that are hard to reach. Philip C. Hopewel=
l, G. B. Migliori & Mario C. Raviglione <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volume=
s/84/6/428.pdf> argue that a new publication, International standards for =
tuberculosis care, could help to address shortcomings in treatment offered =
in the private sector in a third editorial.

The Bulletin reports on the untimely death of WHO Director-General Dr Lee J=
ong-wook. This month's interview <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/=
interview0606/en/index.html> is with Howard Zucker, Assistant Director-Gen=
eral for WHO's Health Technology and Pharmaceuticals cluster. Gary Humphrey=
s reports on what the WHO clinical trials registration initiative <http://w=
ww.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/news10606/en/index.html> means for patien=
ts. Owen Dyer reports on a formula for successful philanthropy in practice =
in Kenya <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/news20606/en/index.html>=
. Theresa Braine reports on the top posts in the world's international pub=
lic health organizations <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/news3060=
6/en/index.html> that are changing hands.

In this month's Public Health Classic, Robert N. Proctor <http://www.who.in=
t/bulletin/volumes/84/6/494.pdf> comments on the ground-breaking work of A=
ngel H. Roffo of Argentina, one of the first researchers to conclude that t=
ar, rather than nicotine, was a major cause of lung cancer. One of his pape=
rs, Krebserzeugende Tabakwirkung <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/=
497.pdf> (The carcinogenic effects of tobacco) is reproduced here in the B=
ulletin accompanied by an English language translation.

Michel Garenne & En=E9as Gakusi <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/4=
70.pdf> analysed under-five mortality in sub-Saharan Africa during 1950-200=
0 and found that major progress had been made in terms of child survival. K=
atherine Floyd <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/437.pdf> et al. i=
nvestigated the cost-effectiveness of WHO's strategy, Public-Private Mix DO=
TS (PPM-DOTS), as applied by private practitioners treating tuberculosis in=
two cities in India. M.A. Hamid Salim <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes=
/84/6/479.pdf> et al. report on how village doctors in Bangladesh, includi=
ng semi-qualified and unqualified practitioners, drug vendors and tradition=
al practitioners, became a valuable resource for tuberculosis care in rural=
areas. In their study on the relationship between alcohol and injury, Guil=
herme Borges <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/453.pdf> et al. sho=
wed that even one drink may carry an increased risk of injury.

K. Srinath Reddy <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/461.pdf> et al.=
did a cross-sectional survey of cardiovascular disease risk factors in ove=
r 20 000 people during 2002-2003, as the first step in establishing a surve=
illance system for these risk factors in 10 industrial sites across India.

Sun protection messages aim to decrease the health consequences of excessiv=
e exposure to ultraviolet radiation, particularly skin cancers and eye dise=
ases. By weighing the health benefits and risks of sun-safe messages, Robyn=
 M. Lucas <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/6/485.pdf> et al. argue =
in their review that public health messages to limit sun exposure need refi=
ning.
