Universities Allied for Essential Medicines
Job posting: Executive Director
Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is a grassroots
student organization with chapters at major research universities in
the United States and Canada. The group=92s mission is (1) ensuring that
university-developed health innovations are made more accessible in
low- and middle-income countries and (2) increasing the amount and
impact of university research on neglected diseases, or those diseases
predominantly affecting people too poor to constitute a market
attractive to private-sector R&D investment.
The Executive Director of UAEM will be responsible for the day to day
coordination of the organization=92s work. He or she will work closely
with the Coordinating Committee, comprised of 10-12 student members, to
ensure the long term strategic, financial and structural viability of
the organization.
Key responsibilities:
-=09In conjunction with the UAEM Coordinating Committee, develop and
implement the strategic direction of the organization
-=09Direct all UAEM =91rapid-response=92 efforts nationally, and if require=
d
by a chapter, locally
-=09Oversee financial matters, including grant-writing, budget status,
and tax filings
-=09Monitor and provide support to campus chapters
-=09Develop research priorities and manage teams working on research
projects
-=09Represent UAEM at relevant conferences and meetings
-=09Oversee public communications, including policy briefs, press
releases, letters to the editor and the UAEM website

-=09Serve as chief spokesperson for UAEM, both to other organizations and
to the media
-=09In conjunction with the Coordinating Committee, organize Coordinating
Committee meetings and annual national conference
-=09Coordinate campaigns with ally organizations and groups
Education/Experience:
-=09Graduate-level degree, preferably in science, public health, law,
business or public policy. Those with =09undergraduate degrees and
experience will also be considered.
-=09Working knowledge of relevant issues, including access to medicines,
intellectual property, university =09technology transfer.
-=09Experience with grassroots work, lobbying, press work, grant-writing,
technical publications, technology =09transfer, international development
is desired.
-=09Prior membership in UAEM and/or similar advocacy organizations a plus.
Preferably full-time, location of position negotiable. 1-year contract
with possibility of renewal.
