Dear Reader,
In this July issue of the Bulletin <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/=
7/en> , a series of articles marks the 25th anniversary of the first diagno=
ses of AIDS <http://www.who.int/bulletin/current/hiv_articles/en/index.html=
> : including an editorial, three research papers, a policy-and-practice pa=
per, a public health review, and a news feature. In the editorial, Kevin De=
Cock & Ian Grubb <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/506.pdf> argue=
that WHO needs to refocus its efforts and mobilize new resources to achiev=
e a new target: universal access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) by 2010.
In the three research papers: Harry Peter Hausler et al. <http://www.who.in=
t/bulletin/volumes/84/7/528.pdf> describe how they measured the cost of im=
plementing TB/HIV clinical interventions as part of the ProTEST pilot in So=
uth Africa, Vinod Mishra et al. <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/5=
37.pdf> describe the methods used in the demographic and health surveys to=
collect nationally representative data on the prevalence of people who are=
HIV positive and Taha E. Taha et al. <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/=
84/7/546.pdf> describe a 2000-2003 study in Malawi where they found that -=
although HIV can be transmitted from mother to infant by breastfeeding - b=
reastfeeding is associated with a reduction in infant and child mortality.
Lydia Kapiriri & Douglas K. Martin <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/=
7/576.pdf> examine the decision of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tubercul=
osis, and Malaria to suspend its grants to Uganda in 2005 and discuss how o=
ther countries can avoid a similar fate. April D. Kimmel et al <http://www.=
who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/581.pdf> . describe how they did a systematic=
review of the performance of diagnostic tests for clinical and laboratory =
monitoring of HIV-positive adults in developing countries, the results of w=
hich showed a wide variation in disease definitions and methods of evaluati=
ng diagnostic tests.
In the News section <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/news.pdf> , J=
acqui Wise reports on the growing demand for circumcision <http://www.who.i=
nt/bulletin/volumes/84/7/news10706/en/index.html> in southern Africa in a =
bid to prevent HIV transmission, meanwhile public health experts are warnin=
g men that circumcision may reduce the risk of HIV infection but does not p=
rovide full protection. Gary Humphreys reports on pharmaceutical industry f=
ears <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/news30706/en/index.html> th=
at WHO's clinical trials initiative will limit companies' ability to compet=
e and dent profitability, while other research funders welcome the initiati=
ve. Jane Parry reports on how WHO is coordinating efforts of nongovernmenta=
l and international organizations to help the Indonesian government with it=
s emergency response to the May 27 earthquake <http://www.who.int/bulletin/=
volumes/84/7/news20706/en/index.html> .
In the WHO News section <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/who_news.=
pdf> , Acting Director-General Anders Nordstr=F6m outlines his priorities f=
or the coming months in an interview <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/8=
4/7/interview0706/en/index.html> ; the Bulletin sums up highlights of the W=
orld Health Assembly in May and outlines the accelerated procedure for elec=
ting a new director-general; and the former head of WHO's HIV/AIDS Departme=
nt, Jim Yong Kim <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/517.pdf> writes=
a personal tribute to his friend and fellow Korean LEE Jong-wook, the late=
WHO Director-General, who died on 22 May.
In an editorial, Scott M. Sasser et al. <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volume=
s/84/7/507.pdf> lament the fact that much of the world's population does n=
ot have access to trauma care and call for sustainable and affordable pre-h=
ospital trauma care systems for everyone. In another editorial (p.508), Eva=
Rehfuess el al. <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/508.pdf> call f=
or more attention to be paid to the problem of indoor air pollution.
Meg E. Wirth et al. <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/519.pdf> dem=
onstrate how it is possible to analyse data from international household-le=
vel surveys from specific countries to measure health disparities. C. Kolap=
pan et al. <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/555.pdf> set out to m=
easure mortality and excess general mortality and to identify groups at hig=
h risk of dying among a cohort of tuberculosis patients treated in Chennai =
Corporation clinics in south India in 2000. Xuan-yi Wang et al. <http://www=
.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/561.pdf> estimated the burden of disease du=
e to bacillary dysentery in China. By integrating data extracted from publi=
shed government sources from 1991 to 2000, the authors found that although =
morbidity and mortality declined over the past decade, a considerable disea=
se burden still remains.
Call for papers <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/7/foreign_policy_th=
eme_call_for_papers/en/index.html> : the Bulletin welcomes papers for all i=
ts sections on health and foreign policy for a theme issue to be published =
in March, 2007. The issue will look at how public health has grown in impor=
tance to the making and implementing of countries' foreign policy over the =
past decade.
