Recent Accomplishments
*Created a fund to collect contributions in support of educational
events related to proposals for WIPO Development Agenda on the
importance of IP to development.
*Helped develop an ICC Response to the European Commission=92s
questionnaire on the European patent system.
*Attended OECD experts meeting to develop measurement methodologies
for the OECD study on the impact of counterfeiting and piracy.
*Participated in preparation of an ICC discussion paper on protecting
traditional knowledge.
*Contributed to development of an ICC statement on TRIPS and special
disclosure requirements in patent applications.
*Helped develop a letter from a cross-sectoral group of industry
associations providing business views to the U.S. government on draft
Chinese IP standards and Antimonopoly Law.
*Hosted a briefing for members to open a direct dialogue with the
U.S. government=92s Coordinator for International IP Enforcement.
*Played an instrumental role in developing a BASCAP brochure on the
nature and importance of intellectual property.
*Contributed to the development of a revised ICC Policy Statement on
the draft EU directive on the patentability of business methods and
computer-implemented inventions.
*Helped shape and communicate ICC comments on the proposal for a WIPO
Development Agenda, both to WIPO and the U.S. government, and
arranged a briefing for members by U.S. officials involved in the
WIPO negotiations.
*Provided industry feedback to the U.S. Departments of State and
Commerce on intellectual property provisions of the draft Hague
Convention on Exclusive Choice of Court Agreements.
*Facilitated communication of business views to the U.S. Department
of the Treasury and G7 Finance Ministers on the importance of
intellectual property protection in the context of the upcoming G8
Summit.
*Represented industry on a delegation to India of international IP
experts and judges for a series of IP seminars, moot court exercises,
government meetings and media interviews.
*Contributed industry views to the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR)
in connection with its out-of-cycle review of China=92s compliance with
intellectual property obligations.
*Collaborated closely with the ICC in developing its new initiative,
Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP).
*Helped lead business efforts to encourage the OECD to undertake an
anti-counterfeiting/piracy project including updating and expanding
upon its 1998 study on the harm caused by counterfeiting and piracy.
*Played an instrumental role in shaping an ICC declaration on the
fight against counterfeiting and piracy that was presented at the ICC
35th World Congress.
*Provided comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on its
recommendations concerning the interface of antitrust and
intellectual property.
*Maintained a dialogue with U.S. trade negotiators concerning TRIPs
and USCIB member opposition to the weakening of patent protection.
*Played an instrumental role in shaping a BIAC statement regarding
intellectual property rights and innovation that was presented to the
OECD Committee on Science and Technology Policy.
*Communicated, to the U.S. Government and the World Intellectual
Property Organization (WIPO), support for the creation of a WIPO
Committee on Enforcement.
*Provided comments to the DOJ/FTC public hearings on antitrust and
intellectual property.
*Contributed to the development of ICC Policy Statements regarding a
draft EU Directive on business method patents and computer-
implemented inventions, and regarding a draft EU transfer of
technology block exemption regulation.
*Facilitated business-government dialogue on intellectual property
policy, arranging meetings between USCIB and various government
officials.
