Activists plan Norvir protest on April 23 in Illinois
AIDS activists and health advocates angered by escalating drug prices
will hold a protest outside Abbott Laboratories' annual shareholder
meeting on April 23 in Abbott Park, Ill. Abbott in December increased
the price of its seven-year-old HIV protease inhibitor Norvir by nearly
400%, boosting the cost for the drug from about $1,500 per year to
around $7,200. Chicago-area activists are being offered free
transportation to the meeting. Buses will leave Chicago at 6 a.m. from
5500 N. Broadway Ave. and 1224 S. Wabash Ave. Coffee and doughnuts will
be provided during the trip. The protest will begin at 8 a.m. outside
the Abbott meeting. To reserve space on the buses, call Brent at (312)
427-2114, ext. 114. The protest is being organized by the AIDS Treatment
Activists Coalition and Citizen Action Illinois.
