E-drug: Query on essential drugs & blindness
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear all,

I carry out a study for the spanish ONG Intermsn_Oxfam, with
support of the ONCE (Organizacisn Nacional de Ciegos de Espana),
a comparative research among countries on:

ACCESSIBILITY TO ESSENTIAL DRUGS IN PREVENTION AND
TREATMENT OF BLINDNESS

This will be a policy paper, as part of the Intermsn-Oxfam campaign
on access to essential drugs and fair trade. We try to show the
avoidable character of main cases of blindness (especially, by
glaucoma and cataracts), whose solution depend on the access to
drugs and basic surgical kit, in affordable conditions, especially in
lesser developed countries.

Then we are asking about the availability and the price of certain
essential drugs for the treatment of glaucoma and cataracts operation
in different countries of Latin America and Africa. This it is the reason
for the present query. It would be a question for the following drugs
and elementary surgical unit:

 A. GLAUCOMA:

1. Timolol maleate.
2. Pilocarpine

are the previous drugs availables in your country? Which would be its
guide cost/month?

B. OPERATION OF CATARACTS:

The direct cost to operate a cataract with extracapsular extraction
(ECCE.):

1. intra ocular lens,
2. Viscoelastic
3. sutures,
4. Drops

C. Which would be the approximate price for prescription glasses?

In Latin America we focus our attention on Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia
and Ecuador. In Africa, in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Benin.
Though information from other countries is welcome: we are at the
beginning.

I am available for any extra information. Once finished, the resultant
paper will be published the the Intermsn_Oxfam's website.

Thank you very much and regards.
