Sergio Marchi, Canada=92s ambassador to the WTO and chairman of the WTO=92s
General Council, will speak at a special GBD-WITA breakfast on January 14.
As chairman of the WTO General Council, Ambassador Marchi, leads the WTO=92=
s
highest-level Geneva based body, a body with the authority to act on behalf
of the ministerial conference. He does so at a critical time. The Doha
Development Agenda is scheduled to conclude on January 1, 2005, and there
are deadlines aplenty between now and then. =93New deadlines face us at eac=
h
stage of the Doha process,=94 Ambassador Marchi said recently, =93and we ca=
nnot
afford to postpone the decisions on key issues.=94 These include decisions =
on
modalities for the agriculture negotiations and initial offers in the
services negotiations by the end of March.

Will these deadlines be met? Will the current stumbling blocks on access to
medicines and special and differential treatment be resolved soon? Join us
on January 14 for the perspectives of the diplomat at the center of all of
these issues.
