Note: 12,000 Nigerian Naria = USD 100.42 at today's exchange rate

I believe the ARVs cited in the story from a "drug manufacturing company
abroad" are the ARVs from Cipla that Nigeria has been planning on using
to start such a program. The last I heard of this program was last
month, and it was having troubles getting off the ground. Does anyone
know more about the status of this?

On HIV/AIDS, he said the advocacy, prevention and awareness aspects of
the campaign have received intense boost following the successful
hosting of the summit on HIV/AIDS and consequent multilateral actions
which the summit had encouraged through non-governmental organisations.

In the area of care, he said the ministry has received the first
consignment of 5000 anti-retrovirals from a drug manufacturing company
abroad.

According to officials of the ministry, at the moment, 10,000 adults and
5,000 children have been placed on heavily subsidised anti retroviral
drugs. Patients are required to pay only N12,000 for drugs that would
have cost as much as N250,000 per annum.
