Note: This group has been one of the louder voices saying that patents
are not an issue when it comes to access to drugs in Africa, and Lee
Gillespie-White co-authored the recent JAMA paper.

Institute Honored at United Nations Global Community Day
Washington, DC - October 27, 2001 -
IIPI's Lee Gillespie-White accepts an award at UN Global Community Day
The International Intellectual Property Institute (IIPI) today received
a Blue Ribbon Award from the United Nations Association of the National
Capitol Area as part of the Association's annual Global Community Day
activities. The award honors IIPI's efforts to educate the public
regarding the HIV/AIDS pandemic and specifically for a briefing to
Congress on the topic this past summer.
IIPI Project Counsel Lee Gillespie-White accepted the award at a morning
ceremony held at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International
Studies. "We are honored to be recognized for our work by the United
Nations Association," said Gillespie-White. "For more than a year the
Institute has been working to educate policymakers around the world
about the intellectual property issues surrounding the provision of
patent-protected medicines to HIV/AIDS-infected patients."
The Blue Ribbon was awarded for a Congressional briefing that was
organized in cooperation with the Congressional Economic Leadership
Institute (CELI). The briefing brought together leading international
experts from academia, government and the private sector to discuss
Congress's role in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa.
