*BSS, Dhaka, Feb 16: Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Khandaker
Mosharraf Hossain on Tuesday said the government has finalized the
tobacco control bill under the guidelines of Framework Convention on
Tobacco Control (FCTC) of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The bill will be enacted as a law in the current session of the Jatiya
Sangsad, he said while talking to leaders of Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco
Alliance at his office in Dhaka.

Dr Mosharraf said as soon as the bill is passed, all tobacco
advertisements both in print and electronics media would be banned.
"This would help deter youths from smoking," he added.

After the enactment of the law, anti-tobacco campaigners should play an
important role in creating anti-smoking awareness among the people for
proper implementation of the law, the minister said.

The Anti-Tobacco Alliance leaders hailed the minister for initiating the
bill in parliament and assured of their allout support in creating
awareness for its execution.

Alliance Coordinator Saifuddin Ahmed, general secretary of Consumers
Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Kazi Farooque and programme officer of
Hunger Project Ataur Rahman Miton were present, among others.
