The Global Economy for Everyone: Who Wins?....Who Loses?
        Find out how Big Tobacco uses the tools of
 corporate-led globalization to increase their profits!

Sponsoring Organizations: San Francisco Tobacco Free Coalition,
Essential Action

Date:     Friday, November 22
Time:     9:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m.
Place: The Women's Building/Edificio de Mujeres, San Francisco

Attend this NCTOH 2002 Ancillary meeting to:

* Learn the basics of how the global economy works;
* Find out how the transnational tobacco companies use the global
economy to their benefit;
* Hear how the U.S. position toward the Framework Convention on Tobacco
Control (global tobacco control treaty) might have an adverse impact on
local, state and national tobacco control laws

More background:

As tobacco control advocates, it is important we understand how the
Transnational Tobacco Companies (TNT's) use trade agreements like the
World Trade Organization (WTO) and the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) and other elements of the corporate led global economy
to promote tobacco use globally. For example, tobacco was at the heart
of negotiations over China's entry into the WTO. As part of the
conditions to join the WTO, China agreed to reduce its tariff on
American Tobacco and to end its ban on American tobacco leaf.

This workshop will provide a history and overview of the structures and
mechanisms of the global economy, including case studies that illustrate
the impact on people and the environment. Particular emphasis will be
placed on how TNT's use the global economy, how the U.S. position toward
the FCTC (global tobacco control treaty) could potentially have an
adverse impact on tobacco control laws given the structure of trade
agreements and on local/statewide campaigns that U.S tobacco prevention
projects can participate in to address these issues. A concrete example
of a local project that addresses a global tobacco company and its food
subsidiary companies will be included.
