SEOUL -(Dow Jones)- The South Korean government will raise the
tariff on
imported cigarettes to 20% from the current 10%, starting July 1 ,
the Ministry
of Finance and Economy said Thursday.
The tariff was introduced in July last year, when the government
first allowed
competition in the then-monopoly tobacco manufacturing market. The
government
plans to raise the tariff by 10 percentage points each year, until
a 40% tariff
is reached in July 2004 .
The tariff doesn't apply to raw tobacco.
