Speaker Bios:
Mary Assunta works for the Consumers Association of Penang in Malaysia,
where she coordinates national action against the tobacco industry. An
expert on tobacco advertising, she was the first foreign tobacco control
advocate to publicly challenge Philip Morris CEO Geoffrey Bible at the
company's annual stockholders' meeting in 1998. She has served as a member
of the World Health Organization's Policy & Strategy Advisory Committee on
Tobacco and is a member of the Steering Committee for the Framework
Convention Alliance, an alliance of over 160 groups from some 73 countries
dedicated to a strong and effective global tobacco treaty. She is currently
on a one-year sabbatical at the University of Sydney researching tobacco
industry documents relating to South East Asia and pursuing a Masters in
Public Health. She recently contributed a photo-essay to the publication
"How Do You Sell Death"
(http://tobaccofreekids.org/campaign/global/FCTCreport2.pdf), an expose of
tobacco industry advertising around the globe.
Dr. Eva Kralikova is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine at
Charles University in the Czech Republic. As head of the Smoking Cessation
Clinic at the University, Eva has spent over a decade fighting the tobacco
industry in the Czech Republic. She is the author and co-author of over 100
publications and papers on tobacco addiction and cessation. In July of 2001,
Eva played a key role in exposing a Philip Morris-financed study which
sought to convince the Czech government that early deaths from smoking had
"positive effects" because they save the government money. She was
subsequently quoted extensively in the U.S. media, and appeared on ABC World
News Tonight and the CBS Evening News. She is a member of the Czech Medical
Society and the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. (for more
