President Kim Dae-jung yesterday called for stronger regulations on
cigarette smoking, saying that the government must be ready to sacrifice
tax revenues for the good of public health.
"We must work towards reducing cigarette consumption even if this means
less tax for the government," Kim said after receiving a policy briefing
from Minister of Health and Welfare Choi Sun-jung at Chong Wa Dae.
Kim instructed Prime Minister Lee Han-dong to work out a set of measures
aimed at curbing cigarette smoking.
"It is necessary to prohibit smoking in public places," the President
said.
Kim also said he agreed with the suggestion from the head of the National
Cancer Center that the government raise tobacco prices and use the
additional revenue to fight cancer. (CSY)
