Question of the Month - December 2003
*************************************

Dear Friends,

An important key to successful tobacco control advocacy campaigns is
having good data to support one's case. The most effective statistics
tell a compelling story, illustrate a key argument, contradict tobacco
industry misinformation, and/or underline strong public support. This
month we will gather examples of advocacy-oriented research from around
the world.

DECEMBER'S QUESTION: Have you or your organization ever conducted a
survey to generate information for a tobacco control advocacy campaign?
If so, briefly describe (1-3 paragraphs*) the main objectives of the
campaign, the survey's basic methodology and key findings, and how you
incorporated the results into your advocacy work. Of particular
interest: examples of small, low-cost, community-based surveys.

And if you have not conducted a survey before, we encourage you to share
an example of how you have effectively incorporated statistics generated
by others into your advocacy work.

As always, share your answer with your partner if you have one, and send
a copy to Essential Action. Deadline: FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2004

* Feel free to send us additional information, e.g. a sample survey, a
relevant press release, a detailed description of your methodology or a
report based on your community-based research. We can easily add them to
the GPTC website.

Best wishes,
Anna
