Here is a competition that some web-savvy youth-to-youth global
partnerships might be interested in entering. Two of the topics for the
upcoming contest cycle are relevant to the tobacco industry's global
expansion and the international epidemic of tobacco-related death and
disease: the world economy & medicine.

Oracle Foundation Invites Students from Around the World to Take Part in
New ThinkQuest Competition

Deadline: February 29, 2004

The Oracle "Help Us Help" Foundation (http://www.helpushelp.org/), a
philanthropic program of Oracle Corporation, is launching a new,
international ThinkQuest competition.

The contest, which is open to students and their teacher-coaches from
anywhere in the world, is designed to promote collaboration and
cross-cultural learning by encouraging students to team with their peers
in other regions or countries to develop Web sites on educational
topics. The topics for the upcoming contest cycle include non-native
species; natural disasters; mythology & folklore; space travel; the
world economy; and medicine. The global competitions will run
semi-annually, beginning each autumn and spring, to encourage
participation from both Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Students between the ages of nine and nineteen are invited to form teams
of three to six students, supervised by a teacher-coach. Teams will have
approximately six months to work on their sites, focusing on their
chosen topic area. All sites must be submitted in English or Spanish,
and bonus points will be awarded to multilingual entries. The projects
will then be evaluated through a two-step process that includes peer
review and scoring by volunteer educators. Sites that meet the
evaluation criteria will be published in the ThinkQuest Library, a free
public resource of Web-based lessons created by students for students.

Three prizes are awarded in each of the three age divisions (12 and
under, 15 and under, 19 and under) along with an overall Best of Topic
prize for each subject area. Each winning team member (students and the
primary coach) will be eligible to attend a trip to ThinkQuest Live at
OracleWorld in San Francisco. Winning Web sites will also earn special
recognition in the ThinkQuest Library.

For complete program details and links to winning Web sites from the
recent ThinkQuest USA competition, see the ThinkQuest Web site.
