Hi DC CopyNighters,

The next CopyNight is less than two weeks away and I wanted to
introduce myself and welcome you back to the event if you haven't
been in a while.

I'm Joseph Price, taking over hosting duties from Trammell Hudson.
Thanks, Trammell, for your work on past events. As for me, I'm a
playwright and web designer who's lived in DC since 2000. Like the
rest of you, I'm interested in intellectual property issues,
especially digital rights management.

The next CopyNight is 6 PM, Tuesday, October 24th at RFD in Chinatown.

You can RSVP for the event at upcoming.org if you're a user of that
service. Even if you're not, the link below includes export options
(click "Send to calendar") so you put CopyNight on your schedule so
you don't forget.

I hope I get to meet a lot of you in person on the 24th. There's no
set topic yet, but please pass along suggestions if you have them.
And don't hesitate to send information about other copyright-related
events in the DC area. I'll pass them along to other CopyNighters.
There's information on a November 2nd copyright workshop below as well.

I think it's important that we have a vibrant, informed discussion of
this subject in our nation's capital. I have this hope--you might
share it--that it will trickle up.

DC CopyNight
6 PM, Tuesday, October 24th, 2006
RFD - 810 7th St. NW (Chinatown Metro)

Best,

WHY KEEP THE PUBLIC GUESSING?

Abstract:
The CENDI Copyright Working Group is exploring the feasibility of
establishing a symbol, tag and metadata to mark and identify
government works (Title 17 USC Sec 105) in analog and digital
formats. This is of immediate interest since section (c)(2)(a) in the
Federal Research Public Access Bill (Cronyn-Lieberman) has, as one of
its provisions, the requirement that works by Federal employees "be
marked as being public domain material when published." Whether the
bill ever passes, agencies may chose to implement some or all of the
provisions, following the lead of the National Institutes of Health.
