The European Parliament's Scientific Technology Options Assessment Panel
would like to invite you to a

STOA Workshop on
Policy options for the European patent system
Organised by ETAG on behalf of STOA
Chair: Philippe Busquin, MEP, Chairman of STOA

The workshop takes place in
The European Parliament
60, Rue Wiertz
B-1047 Brussels
Belgium

November 9th
>From 9am to 5pm

The purpose of the patent system is to stimulate innovation and growth. In
recent years, it has expanded to cover new technologies, such as
biotechnology and information and communication technology (ICT), and an
increasing number of patents have been granted. This has raised many
concerns. Does the patent system still fulfil its objectives, or does it,
in some areas, hamper innovation?

The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the system as it stands today
and to discuss the need for reforms within the following focus areas:
=B7=09Flexibility and dynamism of the patent system
=B7=09Patents and access to market
=B7=09Governance of the patent system

Policy options presented by both academics and stakeholders will be
debated at the workshop with MEPs, the project working group and the
audience.

The workshop is a part of the project =93Intellectual property rights -
Policy options for the European patent system=94 commissioned by the STOA
Panel of the European Parliament from the European Technology Assessment
Group and carried out on its behalf by the Danish Board of Technology. The
project is being conducted by a European interdisciplinary working group,
which discusses possible policy options for the improvement of the
European patent system.

In order to participate in the workshop, please register on the following
website http://www.tekno.dk/patent-system, where a preliminary programme
and detailed project information is available. Registration has to be done
before November 1st and there are a limited number of seats. Confirmations
will be sent shortly after registration.

This is an open invitation so please feel free to forward it to colleagues
and friends.

Should you have any questions regarding the workshop, the project or the
Danish Board of Technology, feel free to contact us.
