University Park, Pa. -- In November 2003 Penn State kicked off a
nationwide movement among colleges and universities to offer legal
music downloading services to students. Now, three years later, the
University Park campus is featured in parts of a new Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) video on the subject,
available for viewing at http://www.campusdownloading.psu.edu/ online.
"Penn State believes it is important to protect intellectual
property, and the University's initiative with Napster has done that
in a groundbreaking way in recent years," said Sam Haldeman, the
Napster program coordinator for the University's Information
Technology Services office. "Our students were the first to have
legal access to millions of songs, and other schools around the
country have been rushing to provide the same service."
The new RIAA video highlights some of the options for legal music
downloading and warns about the ramifications of stealing music. It
offers tips on how users can protect themselves from copyright
infringement and provides an overview of some of the popular services.
"The Penn State Napster service is also used in a number of music and
theater classes at the University, and faculty in other academic
areas are also starting to incorporate it into their work with
students," Haldeman said. "In addition, several dozen Penn State
bands and music groups now offer some of their own music on the
Napster service. People around the country are now legally listening
to Penn State student music."
Segments of the RIAA video were shot here at University Park as well
as at other institutions around the country.
The Napster service available to Penn State students provides free
access to more than two million songs. New students can register and
returning students can re-register by visiting http://
napster.psu.edu/ online.
