Most Americans Back Online Access
To Federally Funded Research
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE
May 31, 2006
A majority of U.S. adults say federally funded research findings on
health issues and other topics should be available for free to
doctors and the general public, according to a recent Harris
Interactive poll.

In an online survey of 2,501 U.S. adults, more than 80% of Americans
say they agree strongly or somewhat that research should be available
for free via the Internet because the research is paid for with U.S.
tax dollars.

In addition, 81% of Americans say they agree strongly or somewhat
that access to such research data will help those living with a
chronic illness or disability to get the latest information that
might assist them.

And 62% of Americans say they agree strongly or somewhat that making
the information available online and for free "will help speed up
finding potential cures for diseases," compared to 10% who disagree
somewhat or strongly.

Also check out the ATA at http://www.taxpayeraccess.org/member.html.
It would be great to count you there. ATA members don't pay any dues,
they simply agree to four principles. More information on those is in
this document: http://www.taxpayeraccess.org/docs/ATA%20Member%
20Form.pdf.

QUOTE:
1. American taxpayers are entitled to open access on the Internet to
the peer-reviewed scientific articles on research funded by the U.S.
Government.
2. Widespread access to the information contained in these articles
is an essential, inseparable component of our nation=92s investment in
science.
3. This and other scientific information should be shared in cost-
effective ways that take advantage of the Internet, stimulate further
discovery and innovation, and advance the translation of this
knowledge into public benefits.
4. Enhanced access to and expanded sharing of information will lead
to usage by millions of scientists, professionals, and individuals,
and will deliver an accelerated return on the taxpayers' investment.
