Mr. Williams et.al,

I see and can agree with your points. When we are faced with such compellin=
g individual and state interests that are somewhat at odds we certainly are=
required to balance and yet come up with solutions. While we do not want t=
o throw the baby out with the bathwater or worse, Solomonize it, I think a =
compromize is in order.
I would limit the requirements for storage. Above the costs and technical f=
easibilities, long term retention of personal data is the devils playground=
for innapropriate government intrusion - if you think I am wrong hold a se=
ance and ask McCarthy and Hoover.
However I would decrease the restrictions "police" have on accessing the da=
ta and work on e-warrants and streamline that process. Why should a terrori=
st be able to realtime it and an agent be required to wait on a wooden benc=
h outside some courtroom while the blueprints to Cisco's lab are routed to =
Iran?

Dr. Deirker and all,

I believe that the concern of so much data retention by ISP's poses
several problems, not all related to civil liberties or violations there
of,
which it seems Marc is mostly concerned about.

One of the biggest problems is the cost of such data retention, which
would be passed on to consumers. Another is that when such data
is retained for lengthy periods of time, the exposure to data and ID
theft
becomes heightened and therefore causes even a greater law enforcement
that would not otherwise exist.
