UNESCO representatives vote Thursday on a proposed pact on cultural
diversity supported by the majority of the U.N. body's 191 member
states but opposed by Washington.

The proposed convention aims to protect cultural diversity, promote
ethnic traditions and minority languages, and protect local cultures
from the negative impact of globalization, UNESCO says.

However, the United States says the convention could be used to erect
trade barriers against cultural exports and says the text is "deeply
flawed."

After the vote by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, the convention needs to be ratified separately by 30 of
the 191 members of the organization _ which Washington rejoined in
2003 after a 19-year absence.
