CPTech will hold an informal public meeting (12:30 to 2 pm, bring your
own lunch) on Tuesday, October 11, with Dr. Thomas Faunce, an expert on
the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme.

The United States spends more on medical research than any other
country, but too much is spent on marketing-related studies and too
little on cost-effectiveness studies or head-to-head studies which
compare drugs within a therapeutic class. Australia's PBS system is an
important effort to use pharmaceutical cost-effectiveness reviews to
evaluate the reimbursement rate for pharmaceutical drugs.

Dr. Thomas Faunce is an expert on the Australian PBS system and is
currently engaged in a 3-year study funded by the Australian Research
Council of how the intellectual property provisions of the Australia-US
Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) will modify access to affordable drugs in
Australia. His presentation at 12.30 on Oct 11 will be a valuable
opportunity to understand the Australian model and its potential
relevance to the US.

The meeting will be held at CPTech's new office at 1621 Connecticut
Avenue, Suite 500, which is between Q and R Street on Connecticut
Avenue, very close to the Dupont Circle North subway entrance. Please
let Joy Spencer know if you are planning to attend at
