Another valuable report of this kind - from a point of view outside 'the
system' it is very depressing to see such comprehensive ownership of the
secretariat by one group of aligned interests, apparently with little regard
for public interest.

I would like to ask why this behaviour is never publicly exposed in
mainstream media, when other UN misdeeds (oil for food etc) are quite
assiduously pursued in some cases. Would it be too cynical to conclude that
'Media' are not eager to have public oversight of the processes that might
gift them additional IP rights of potentially large value?

Would it be worth contacting e.g. the Guardian, which should be in favour of
exposing the bad faith of the cartels involved here? A bit of mainstream
coverage would go a long way in getting national politicians attention and
perhaps support.

WIPO's war against consumer interests

These are a few quick reflections on the WIPO General Assembly, or
perhaps more aptly described as the WIPO war on consumer interests.

SNIP *****

As it stands, the big push is to do this without any analysis of the
impact of the treaty on copyright owners or the public, which is a
victory for the broadcasters and the WIPO Secretariat and the USPTO,
but a shame for a UN agency.
