      Intellectual Property:

A committee of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) this
week agreed to draft a treaty on webcasting, going forward in the face of
criticism that it would limit the use of works freely available to the
public. The decision was made Thursday at a Geneva meeting of the WIPO
Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights. News.com reports that
the treaty was proposed by the United States and is backed by Yahoo, the
Digital Media Association and other U.S. webcasters. It aims to extend to
webcasters the same level of international protection for intellectual
property that television and radio broadcasters receive. James Love,
director of the Consumer Project on Technology, criticized the treaty
because, for instance, it would require copies of films that are not
copyrighted to be made from originals held by movie companies rather than
from broadcasts.
