Music Industry To Offer Amnesty To Repentant File Sharers
The recording industry is expected to offer an amnesty program for
people who admit that they illegally share music files on the Internet,
the Los Angeles Times and AP report. The program, which may be announced
as early as next week, promises that companies in the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA) will not sue people for copyright
infringement provided they admit wrongdoing, agree to stop sharing
copyrighted files and pledge to delete all offending songs from their
computers. The offer will not apply to about 1,600 people who already
have been targets of subpoenas from the RIAA. The organization has
indicated that it intends to sue those individuals for copyright
infringement.
