On tuesday the 13th, we are meeting with OMB to discuss several issues,
including progress on putting government contracts on the Internet, and
discussions of how government procurement can make the client software
market more competitive. These include proposals for requirements that
USG purchases of word processing software utilize as a default an open
and non-proprietary standard for file formats, or even that the USG buy
Corel software (now valued about about $80 million) outright and put int
in the public domain, or otherwise use its leverage to address the
increasingly expensive MS monopoly on wordprocessing and related
applications.
