Prof. Rappe has been going round Europe for some years giving talks and
giving evidence at Public Enquiries, on behalf of pro-incineration groups
and companies, talking down the potential health effects, and allowing
everyone to assume that he has a medical background when he has none (He
trained as something like a chemist I think.)
Finally it seems that his assertations have a real chance of being refuted,
as happened below recently in Ireland. If Rappe has been active in your
area, take note!
The AEA report on dioxins quoted below to such good effect, was
commissioned for the EU and the UK DETR, was issued in Oct 99 and is on the
Internet in full at

Apologies for dupe postings and for delay while I rediscovered the website

We are delighted to advise that Wexford County Council voted 19 votes to 1
to reject the Regional Waste Management Strategy of incineration. This means
that Wexford will not now participate in the Regional Strategy. This may
result in the collapse of the strategy but at least will encourage the
other 5 counties in the South East Region to re-visit their uninformed
decision to adopt the strategy.
This vote was taken after almost two hours of presentation and discussion
by Prof. Rappe.
Using the information you [Vyv Howard] provided and the recent EU Report we
prepared a briefing document (please see attached) [sorry, not attached to
the email] for a select number of councillors. Armed with this information
the councillors were very well equipped to undermine the report and
presentation of Prof. Rappe. During the debate Prof. Rappe conceded that;
1. He had no medical qualifications.
2. He had not read the recent comprehensive report from the EU on Dioxins
and Health
3. That at the three month stage children exposed to dioxins had impaired
neurological development. Contrary to the impression in his report.
4. That the National Food Safety Authority in Sweden advise expectant
mothers and those planning to become pregnant to limit their consumption of
certain types of fish.
5. That he was not sufficiently aware of the particle situation to offer an
opinion.
6. That he was involved in advising on the Rechem incinerator and that
problems had occured ( The information on the Rechem incinerator from the
EU report is good).
etc., etc
Mike.
