I've been bitten by bad Microsoft service packs in the past and fixing
things has required me to either update third party software or just
back out the patch. Here, someone finds Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
to be a bad one and, dissatisfied my Microsoft's denials, is
considering taking legal action. This ought to be interesting if it
happens. As far as I know, the Microsoft End User Licence Agreement
limiting Micrsoft's liability to the price of the software or $5 has
never been tested in court.

Here's a link to the story with an excerpt:

Man threatens Microsoft with class action after SP4 failure
http://theinquirer.net/?article=15001

A FRUSTRATED BUSINESSMAN has blown his top with Microsoft after he
claimed that a critical security update for Windows 2000 made his
    PCs unuseable for weeks.

Randy Hubbard, of Raceware Engineering LLC, claimed that SP4
contained defective software, and after going through a lengthy
correspondence with Microsoft technical staff, has concluded that
he has no further alternative but to be "lead plaintiffs in a
Class Action suit against Microsoft for consumer fraud".
