[From CNET bulletin]

News: Microsoft on every DVD?

An industry standards group has made a preliminary decision to include
Microsoft's video-compression technology in a next-generation DVD format.
The provisional approval, which calls for Microsoft's VC-9 technology to
be mandatory for the HD-DVD video specification for playback devices,
gives the company a key boost in the digital media arena. Read CNET's
News.com story to find out more about VC-9 and the conditions of the
committee's approval.
