Ballmer: Hoping Longhorn is the next big bang for Microsoft

Microsoft's CEO overflows with enthusiasm about the future of technology
and Microsoft's place in it. Not exactly a surpise. Ballmer is betting that=
=20
Longhorn, the next generation Windows OS, will be the "big bang" that=20
establishes a new level of technical and market leadership for Microsoft. T=
he=20
goal, according to Ballmer, is to solve new problems rather than just add=
=20
features to its existing products. Given that Microsoft wants to tie much o=
f=20
its development efforts to the release of Longhorn, the new Windows will be
gestating for a few more years. Will tying together the pieces make the
Windows environment more secure, usable, and open? Will Longhorn be a big b=
ang=20
or a black hole? We'll keep you posted.
