""Ports slid towards chaos last week" after British firm Community
Network Services, a subsidiary of Southampton Container Terminals Ltd.
in the U.K., tried to move a customs clearance system from a mainframe
to Windows, Silicon.com reports.

"The gradual degradation of the new system had meant that freight
forwarders and customs agents had to revert to manual processing at
Southampton and Tilbury," Silicon.com said. Some airport freight
operations were affected as well.

On Monday, Community Network said it had moved operations back to the
old mainframe system."
