[Am-info] MS IE "announcement": no more standalone?

Internet Explorer Program Manager Brian Countryman in a May 7th chat
on the MS Web site discussed the changes made to Internet Explorer for
Windows Server 2003:

Microsoft appears to have announced that IE 6 SP1 is the last
standalone version of IE that will ever be released. Henceforth,
upgrades to IE can be obtained only by upgrading the OS. That's
right: if you want IE 7, and but you're running Windows 2000 or
Windows XP, you are SOL. Of course, it may just be a trial balloon to
see if the Bush Administration is still eating out of MS's hand.
See yesterday's CNET article as Redmond, accused of violating promises
to users, throws up a fog of confusion on what the intentions really
are:
