"From German Linux vendor SuSE AG, there's a new SuSE Linux Office
Desktop operating system that allows users to run Microsoft Office 97 or
Office 2000 natively, using built-in software provided by CodeWeavers
Inc.'s CrossOver Office. Users can either install the included
StarOffice 6.0 suite from Sun Microsystems Inc. or CrossOver Office,
which allows the use of Microsoft Office 97 or 2000 and their included
applications.
Holger Dyroff, general manager of SuSE in the Americas, said users will
still need licenses for Microsoft Office, but they won't need a
Microsoft Windows operating system license to run the applications under
SuSE Linux.
SuSE has created the new version of its operating system in response to
customer requests, he said. "We have a huge demand for making the
transition easier for people moving from Windows to Linux," he said.
"StarOffice or OpenOffice [the open-source free version of StarOffice]
is good, and it meets 80% of the needs of users. But it doesn't for the
needs of everybody."
A version for enterprise desktop users, with additional administration
tools and utilities, will be released in the second quarter of the year,
Dyroff said.
Also to be included in the new version is Acronis Operating System
Selector, which will allow users to install the operating system and
easily and automatically dual-boot it with other operating systems to
simplify deployment.
Pricing for the desktop version, which will be available Jan. 27, is $129."
