I have to wonder if they just wanted to make m$ look stupid and harmless. 
For a company like m$, its not about selling a product, its about
projecting an image, and I think that the m$n guy looks stupid.  As others
have proved they can afford to lose vast amounts of money on peripheral
products like m$n and xbox, since they have a money printing operation in
windoze and office.
