Microsoft To Dump Passport Express=20

Microsoft plans to kill its Passport Express service by March and=20
launch MSN Wallet in its place. Weeks after the software vendor=20
bowed to complaints from the Federal Trade Commission and agreed=20
to enhance the security of its online Passport E-commerce and=20
authentication service, it said it would shut down its Passport=20
Express electronic-checkout platform and replace it with MSN=20
Wallet.=20

Although Microsoft says the move is unrelated to the FTC=20
settlement, the vendor says MSN Wallet will feature a number of=20
built-in security measures to protect consumer data. All MSN=20
Wallet payment and address information will be electronically=20
encrypted and stored in a database on servers located in=20
access-controlled facilities. MSN Wallet will also use other=20
safeguards, including comprehensive data filtering before=20
information enters the system.=20

Microsoft will discontinue Passport Express in March, so=20
retailers that use the service won't have to make the switch=20
during the busy holiday season. The vendor says a number of=20
larger retailers, including OfficeMax, Godiva Chocolatier,=20
Nordstrom, and The Sports Authority, have agreed to use MSN=20
Wallet on their Web sites. - Paul McDougall
