Actually, they can.  By actually leveraging their monopoly power in
office applications and desktop operating systems to raise prices on
customers (i.e. "Software Assurance").  While I remain convinced that
viable alternatives exist for both markets, I haven't noticed any
mainstream switch away from Microsoft products in those two markets.  

Which is too bad.
