Dell Lobbies For Linux

SAN FRANCISCO--Dell Computer continues its campaign to get=20
companies to convert from Unix to Red Hat Linux running on Dell=20
servers. Tuesday, it revealed here that it's working with Red Hat=20
to provide the planning and migration services needed to make the=20
switch. Dell also disclosed support for 128-node clusters through=20
its High-Performance Computing Clusters program.

Red Hat will help companies compare the costs of running Linux=20
and Unix and provide a proof-of-concept model to show how Linux=20
will work within a company. Red Hat also will handle the Linux=20
implementation and code porting, says Randy Groves, a general=20
manager at Dell.

Dell's professional-services group will help customers design,=20
build, and implement PowerEdge servers, PowerVault, and EMC Corp.=20
storage systems with Oracle 9i databases and 9i Real Application=20
Clusters on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server. The joint services=20
from Dell and Red Hat start at $5,000.

Dell's Linux announcement incorporates its server and networking=20
products as well as Red Hat's software. Dell's cluster program=20
consists of PowerEdge servers available in eight-, 16-, 32-, 64-,=20
and 128-node configurations that can be clustered to perform as a=20
single system. The bundles are available now, starting at $75,000=20
for eight-node clusters. - Larry Greenemeier
