'Interesting that they've priced a good unit at $2,795, and from what=20
I've been told, they're well made and come with a GOOD selection of=20
software. Has anyone here been able to check one of these offerings=20
out? If so, are they using their own MOB, or a Tyan, etc.? Notice that=20
they AREN'T offered with anything MickySoft!

Intel On Sun--The Market Made McNealy Do It
SAN FRANCISCO--The popularity of Linux and Intel chips in=20
computers used for software design and Web serving has compelled=20
Sun Microsystems to ship its first business computer without a=20
Sun Sparc chip, CEO Scott McNealy said Tuesday.
"Linux is a binary environment, and that binary environment is=20
being dominated by one instruction set, and that's [Intel's]=20
x86," McNealy said Tuesday in a speech at the LinuxWorld=20
conference here. "In the design-center sweet spot," McNealy said,=20
"we'll use Intel chips." Sun's LX50 server lists at $2,795 and
includes the Solaris and Linux operating systems and a stack of=20
Sun software for business computing. Dual-processor servers start=20
at $4,295.
Servers based on Intel chips have been gaining market share at=20
the expense of machines using RISC microprocessors. "There's a=20
fast-growing market for 32-bit servers," McNealy said. The move=20
gives Sun a comparable horse to race against Hewlett-Packard,=20
Dell Computer, and others, McNealy said, but it also lets the
company tap into IT departments attracted to free or low-cost=20
Linux. In fact, the spread of Linux could even make Sun stronger,=20
McNealy said. By pushing software prices down, CIOs might "buy=20
more CPUs, DRAM, and disk drives, which is where we make our=20
money." - Aaron Ricadela
