The Next Wave Of Linux Converts
Satish Mahajan, CIO of the American Automobile Association,
hadn't seriously considered moving critical apps from Unix or
Windows to Linux--until now. He'd worried about support,
security, and disaster recovery. But Mahajan's been hearing of
key vendors backing the operating system in a big way, and that's
got him rethinking his position. "This makes me move Linux up on
my priority list," he says.
Cautious execs this week will hear more from top vendors to whet
their Linux appetites. At the LinuxWorld Conference, Doug Elix,
an IBM senior VP, will talk about the platform as a basis for
utility and grid computing, and the vendor will introduce a Linux
system that includes storage, networking, and cluster-management
software.
Sun CEO Scott McNealy will unveil his version of Linux and
low-end Intel-based rack-mount servers that run it; Sun says it's
addressing IT users' concerns by offering its own version of
Linux, so customers have a single source for hardware,
operating-system, and software support.
And Oracle CEO Larry Ellison will unveil plans to release source
code for a Linux version of its Clustered File System, available
for free on its developer Web site in two months. - Larry
Greenemeier, Robin Gareiss, and Rick Whiting
