Must have been a long time ago.  Virtually all dists. will permit such 
an installation.  Slackware still is not for the newcomer to Linux.  As 
I noted earlier, it can't be beat for older architecture and/or small 
installation footprint.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
