Jobs Touts OS, Unveils New IPod=20

Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs used his keynote speech at the=20
semiannual Macworld trade show in New York to tout the benefits=20
of the company's new operating system. He also introduced a=20
Windows-compatible version of the popular iPod music player,=20
while firing a few shots at rival Microsoft.=20

Earlier this week, tensions arose between Apple and Microsoft as=20
word started leaking out of Redmond, Wash., that Microsoft's=20
commitment to write software for the Mac might be waning, thanks=20
in part to slow adoption of the new Unix-based Apple operating=20
system, OS X. Microsoft is the top outside supplier of software=20
for Apple computers. Jobs said that out of 25 million Mac users=20
worldwide, 2.5 million are active users of the new operating=20
system. That number is on track to hit 5 million by the end of=20
the year, he said, making it the fastest transition to a new=20
operating system in history.=20

Much of his speech was dedicated to promoting the new features of=20
Mac OS X 10.2, the software's latest revision. Code-named Jaguar,=20
it features more than 150 changes to the system, Jobs says, and=20
will be in stores Aug. 24, priced at $129. Apple also plans to=20
make changes to its iTools services, which include mac.com=20
personal Web pages and an online storage tool called iDisk. In a=20
response to Microsoft's .Net services, Jobs said, Apple would=20
change the name of its offering to ".Mac"--the difference between=20
the two being that Apple actually has services available. Apple=20
will start charging $100 per year for the formerly free services.=20
