Tech Talent Act Targets Workforce Of Future=20

The federal government may soon be pumping more money into=20
building a technologically savvy workforce for the future.=20

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions is=20
reviewing the Tech Talent Act of 2002, a bill approved by the=20
House of Representatives earlier this month. If passed into law,=20
it would provide funding for National Science Foundation programs=20
that encourage students to major in science, math, engineering,=20
and technology. No date has been set for a Senate vote.

The government has good reason to be concerned about a shortage=20
of skilled technology workers, bill proponents say. Even though=20
more than 500,000 IT workers have lost their jobs in the past=20
year, 1.1 million tech jobs will need to be filled in the next=20
year, according to a survey of hiring managers by the Information=20
Technology Association of America, a nonprofit advocacy group for=20
the high-tech industry. And according to the General Accounting=20
Office, more than half of the federal government's IT workforce=20
will be eligible to retire by 2006. - Eileen Colkin
