Microsoft Gives Glimpse Of New Exchange
Microsoft has begun to share details of updates to its Exchange=20
E-mail system and Outlook E-mail client, and company officials=20
say the releases--slated for mid-2003--will address three key=20
needs by improving inbox management, beefing up wireless access,=20
and making it possible to support more users with each Exchange=20
server. The release figures to be important in the history of=20
Exchange, with IBM's Lotus Software set to release the update to=20
its Notes/Domino system this fall and Oracle planning to=20
introduce a cheaper alternative by year's end.
The new Exchange, code-named Titanium, will let information=20
workers make better use of their E-mail, while driving down costs=20
for administrators. On the back end, Exchange will include the=20
ability to create a "volume shadow copy," essentially a snapshot=20
of the Exchange database that can be taken at frequent intervals=20
throughout the day, preventing IT staff from having to re-create=20
histories or refer to backup tapes when problems occur. The=20
result is a quick-response capability that will let=20
administrators support more users from a single Exchange server,=20
lead product manager Chris Baker says.
Titanium also will include out-of-the-box support for wireless=20
E-mail access via PDAs and cell phones, which now requires the=20
deployment of Microsoft's mobile information server.=20
Users also will get an updated version of Outlook for accessing=20
their messages. The new client will feature a different look=20
designed to improve message readability, inbox organization, and=20
search capabilities. - Tony Kontzer
