RIM Posts 1Q Loss

Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the BlackBerry wireless E-mail=20
device, reported a first-quarter net loss of $10.8 million, or 14=20
cents per share, down from an income of $3.8 million, or 5 cents=20
a share, in the same quarter a year ago. Revenue was $71.6=20
million for the quarter ended June 1, down about 7% from $77=20
million a year ago. Handheld sales accounted for 39% of revenue,=20
service 41%, software licenses 13%, and original equipment=20
manufacturer radios and other revenue 7%.

Demand continues to be strong for the BlackBerry devices, with=20
more than 34,000 subscribers signing on in the quarter, reaching=20
a total of 355,000, chairman and co-CEO Jim Balsille said during=20
a conference call. He expects that number to continue to increase=20
in the second quarter and to grow "significantly" in the second=20
