Pay-As-You-Go Gets Bigger At IBM

IBM continues to push utility computing, or pay-per-use pricing,=20
for hardware, software, and services. IBM is launching Linux=20
Virtual Services, a utility-priced service for hosting Linux apps=20
on zSeries mainframes at IBM data centers. IBM will also host=20
customers' custom-developed Linux apps. It will manage the apps=20
and the physical environment around its servers, too.

Utility computing is an alternative to running IT operations=20
in-house or outsourcing for a fixed price. Customers determine=20
the average computing capacity they use monthly and provision=20
those resources from IBM, which charges "service units." Each=20
Linux Virtual Services unit is priced at $300 per month, although=20
IBM doesn't provide specific values for the amount of hardware,=20
software, and services that comprise a unit. Customers can=20
increase or decrease the number of service units they use=20
monthly.

Utility computing is still a fairly new paradigm, says Charles=20
King, a senior analyst with the Sageza Group. Companies most=20
interested in IBM's new Linux Virtual Services will be those that=20
are already running Linux on their own zSeries mainframes.=20
