What is interesting is that not only did this come out in Newsweek/MSNBC but
PRNewswire (a corporate 'loudspeaker' for announcements) is carrying the
story, which begs the question is Microsoft releasing this "story" more as a
trial balloon for marketing purposes than actual "news".

I also found it sad that Steve Levy dove into the realms of sensationalism
and over-generalization of the issues  - I tend to agree with and enjoy most
of his stuff over the years, this was a rather disappointing piece.

Should something like this ever be realized, I fear we will truly enter a
new Dark Age, where we all become "serfs" to invasive, over-arching
corporate masters. Such a concept - as MS is planning - is downright
sinister, evil, invasive, and Big Brotherish the likes we've not seen before
in the industry, and will have ramifications far beyond just the IT world,
including an adverse impact on society in general....despite it being
promoted as "security" or "pro consumer".

I fear 'security' is becoming the new carrot to replace 'network-ready' or
'e-whatever' as the new buzzword that launches a million flawed initiatives.

Maybe the conspiracy theorists aren't as far-off as people think.....
