I bet it's to avoid the exclusive profit uber alles mentality that is
encouraged in public companies.  My perception is that being a public
company with a 'fiduciary responsibility to shareholders' and a sense
that there is no place where the buck stops tends to lead to corruption
and ethically questionable behavior.
