Just out of curiosity, which arm of Dell is telling you this?  I know that 
the US Dell reversed their decision to pre-install Linux on their consumer 
level computers and reverted to their Windows-only policy, but I understood 
that some of their overseas divisions (their Australian arm is one example) 
decided to continue to offer Linux as a pre-installed option on the consumer 
level machines.

Regardless of Dell's software preferences, the quality of their laptops 
leaves something to be desired.  IBM sounds like a better choice there.
