IBM Unveils New WebSphere Software
IBM, which appears to be increasing its share of the software=20
market, is looking to build on that momentum with several=20
upgrades to its E-commerce product line. The most significant is=20
version 5 of the WebSphere application server, the Java-based=20
platform for running E-commerce and other Web-based applications.=20
In Web development, Java is the major competitor to Microsoft's=20
Windows.
The upgrade supports Java 2 Enterprise Edition 1.3, the latest=20
standard for the platform, and includes built-in support for Web=20
services, emerging technologies for connecting business=20
applications over the Web. When WebSphere ships in the third=20
quarter, it will be on par technically with its biggest rival,=20
BEA Systems Inc.'s WebLogic. Besides catching up with BEA=20
technologically, IBM appears to have gained market share. In=20
2001, IBM's share rose to 34%, from 31% the previous year, while=20
BEA dropped to 34%, from 36%, according to the latest figures=20
from Giga Information Group. While market-share figures can vary=20
considerably among analyst firms, there's consensus that IBM has=20
gained momentum in the E-commerce software market. "IBM looks=20
good [technically], and they're also on a roll," says Forrester=20
Research analyst Chris Dial. "They're certainly giving BEA the=20
fight of their life." On Tuesday, IT advisory firm Gartner=20
Dataquest reported IBM last year deposed Oracle as the No. 1=20
seller worldwide of database software, 34.6% to 32%. - Antone=20
